After the Pizza at Siesta Beach

People bring carry-out meals to the beach, eat and dash to the sand or the water.
Sometimes they leave behind their wrappers, cans and boxes.
The gulls enjoy the scraps they leave behind and the beach patrol disposes of what is left.

Waiting out the rain

Storms, in the Gulf, appear and fade away quickly.
Some people wait on the beach for rain to come or go.
Lightning strikes frequently in our area and an umbrella may not be a good place to wait as they conduct electricity.
I sketched this sky and couple from the car and painted it later, at home,
where it was dry.

A special spot on Siesta Beach

Siesta Key Beach has many paths to take you to the water.
This is a quiet stretch away from the bathers and noise.
this could be my friend Bob on his sailboat or perhaps a family taking their last tack before the sun sets.

Diving Dolphin near sunset

Late in the afternoon the dolphins come to feed and follow the coast line off of Turtle Beach, heading toward Siesta.
If one is lucky they can be seen as the setting sun slips into the Gulf.
Here is one for you to enjoy.

Early on

I was influenced by El Greco, Picasso and Pollack.
I used mixed media including oil, casein, watercolor, Encaustic, scratch-board, mobiles and sculpture to create abstracts and surreal works.
Later, I was influenced by Norman Rockwell, Andrew Wyeth, and Eric Sloane.
I taught myself to work in acrylic, creating realistic impressions of what I saw and imagined.
I also began to study and explore the Old Masters and Impressionists and added their techniques to my art.
Now I am combining these influences into my "acquired style" and experimenting with techniques if they me.
I sketch, photograph and make field notes and may combine several ideas into a composition.
I also arrange objects and forms into still life studies.

Gulf near sunset.

When the sun begins to set, it and the water burst
forth in a rainbow of colors.
This evening it brought a complimentary color scheme.

The sky

in El Greco's Toledo awed me at a young age. His sky had such power. I worked on painting skies with futility for many years.
Then I discovered Eric Sloane. He painted masterful skies that I tried to emulate. I learned that he had written an instructional book in 1950, Skies and the Artist, but found it to be out of print.
I wrote him a letter asking if there might me one available somewhere. He sent me an autographed copy that I treasure. I still refer to it for believable skies and hope they bring something memorable to you.

Heron on Siesta beach

The birds find some meals in the water.
This one is waiting on a meal or perhaps a mate to come by.
Sometimes their best meal comes from the catch of a surf fishing fisherman they are shadowing. They wait patiently for handouts. Sometimes they get tangled in the fishing line.

Some even steal their meal from the bait bucket of a fisherman that is focused on his fishing or other interest.
I put that story in a painting that you will find as you  continue through this blog.

You may notice

that I may use the same subject matter more than one time.
I may use a different color scheme or technique with the same subject.
I may combine one or more subjects into a larger painting.
Often the 5 x 7 works are painted to workout colors schemes and are expanded or combined into into a larger painting.

I had a graphic art production shop that had scanned my work into a high quality printing machine. They printed copies of the originals and were available for sale.
Sad to say, the printer went out of business and the prints can no longer be made. i have a few left and if you look below the original, you will see the quantiy and price.
Needless to say, I am looking for quality printer.

Guy going to the Siesta beach

This path to the beach is flanked by growth of grass,
weeds and other plants. The lavender is what some
call a weed but it is as colorful as a flower for a short
period of time, only in the fall.
See how it matches the evening sky.

bird on bench near the beach

The benches usually face the water near the beaches.
I found this one with a gull perched on it either waiting
for a handout or perhaps another gull.
I sketched it and went home to paint it.
I ignored the condos that were in the background and
put a sliver of the gulf there to give you a glimpse of it.

Lonely boat

You don't think of seeing small row boats in the Gulf but this one was a dingy anchored near the beach. The owner had rowed from his yacht that was moored farther out so he and his partner could enjoy some time on the beach.

I sketched it in pastel and painted it in the air conditioning at home.
The Beach, in the summer, is a great place to sketch but I don't like to paint there.

These little birds find food it what the sea washes onto the sand.
